Mike Derry’s victory in the UCP nomination contest in Calgary-Shaw raised eyebrows. Dani Panama’s favourite candidate Dan McLean lost to forces of the extremist far-right in her party.
Derry’s campaign was managed by the far-right Craig Chandler and received prominent public support from leaders in Alberta’s separatist movement. His campaign also included the endorsement of Darrell Komick, who ran for UCP president as the party’s pro-independence candidate.
The UCP stronghold riding of Calgary-Shaw was considered a hands down win. Elections Alberta says unofficial results show NDP candidate Kyle Campbell received 7,461 votes, and Mike Derry getting 6,879. The south Calgary riding has long voted Conservative, with the NDP winning the seat only once in 2015.
Mike Derry was running to represent the views of extremists who hope to break up this country. That view is being rejected by Canadians.
