HA and Red Devils look at prison for Hamilton bar assault

Five bikers who assaulted and robbed a probationary member of a rival club could face more time after the crown sought a declaration that the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club is a criminal organization in determining a sentence. As part of a criminal organization as an aggravating factor, it could increase each of the biker’s sentences by up to a year.

The five men convicted were the first to walk into the Hamilton bar Cadillac Jax in July 2024. Joel Rollin, 41, of Grimsby, Trevor Pittman, 34, of Ancaster, Daniel Fish, 36, of Brantford, William Ashford-Smith, 36, of Hamilton and Jason Hall, 51, of York. Fish is a member of the Red Devils, the rest Hells Angels.

When the group arrived, David Robson, then the president of the Rock Machine’s Guelph chapter, “beelined it” inside and hid his colours behind the bar.

Robson claimed to have retired from the motorcycle gang a week later. Another man wearing a Vendettas motorcycle club vest did the same after the assault on Scherer began.

Daniel Scherer, a Rock Machine prospect, was among people on the patio of the Main Street East bar around 7 p.m. when 16 motorcycles pulled up. Many wore motorcycle club colours of Hells Angels and Red Devils. Knocked unconcious, he died at age 67 and didn’t testify. The sentencing hearing Thursday was specifically for three men: Rollin, Ashford-Smith and Hall. They are looking at a significant stretch for the beating, between four and six years.

“Hells Angels have been found to be a criminal organization in Ontario for 20 years, why go through this song and dance every time when everybody in the world knows it,” said prosecutors.
