The B.C. Human Rights Tribunal awarded more than $9k to a man who said he was the victim of caste-based discrimination.
Adjudicator Sonya Pighin found that Manoj Bhangu had been discriminated against because he was called ‘chamar’. Chamar is the name of his Dalit caste, considered a derogatory term in Punjabi, uttered by his employer Inderjit and Avninder Dhillon. “”[Bhangu’s] history of caste-based discrimination in India intensified the severity of the impact he experienced regarding the discrimination.”
