Canada’s economy lost 84,000 jobs in February, the worst showing in years, with the unemployment rate up to 6.7%.

Youth unemployment in Canada is surging, with the rate for 15-to-24-year-olds reaching 14.1%, marking a multi-year high. Nearly 420,000 young workers in Canada are unemployed. This is the group most effected by importing foreigners for no skill agriculture work.

In 2025 Ottawa stopped employers in specified CMAs from accessing the low‑wage LMIA stream where unemployment was at or above 6%. Ottawa publishes a list of eligible and ineligible regions, with the next review scheduled for April 10.

In Kelowna, the unemployment rate is 6.4%. In Q1 2026, stabilization followed a spike to 11% in November 2025 before dropping to 8.6% in December.
