Mexico’s most-wanted drug leader ‘El Mencho’ killed

Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, the head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and one of the world’s most-wanted traffickers, died following a Mexican military operation. Oseguera was an elusive figure who had been considered Mexico’s most powerful cartel boss since Sinaloa kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was arrested last decade.

Oseguera Cervantes was wounded in the operation to capture him Sunday in Tapalpa, Jalisco about a two-hour drive southwest of Guadalajara and he died while being flown to Mexico City. Troops came under fire and killed four at the location.

Three more people, including Oseguera Cervantes, were wounded and later died. Two others were arrested and armoured vehicles, rocket launchers and other arms were seized. Three members of the armed forces were wounded.

Wanted by authorities in Mexico and the U.S., Oseguera ‘El Mencho’ kept a low profile – so much so that only a handful of photographs of him exist.

His death Feb 22 in a Mexican military operation in Tapalpa, in the western coastal state of Jalisco, has triggered widespread unrest across parts of the country.

The U.S. designated CJNG as a terrorist organization in February 2025, and Oseguera had already been indicted multiple times in the United States, including being charged in 2022 with conspiracy to manufacture and distribute methamphetamine, cocaine and fentanyl for importation into the US.
