Kerry Lake clear cut – Harley Chingee

Virtually all Treaty settlement lands that had been turned over to the McLeod Lake Indian Band were quickly turned into a lifeless, clearcut wasteland by 2023. The band’s treaty settlement lands have been decimated with over 90% of the trees falling in the three years ending in 2020. They were worth $120m.

On June 25, 2024, citing allegations of serious misconduct and theft, the McLeod Lake Indian Band Council announced it would no longer engage in meetings with Chief Harley Chingee while the band conducts an investigation. There was no news on any investigation since.

In just three years, much of the McLeod Lake Indian Band’s treaty lands were stripped bare of their trees in a flurry of logging that included one clearcut over 3,000 hectares in size.

Harley Chingee, chief, is the only one who might know where his people’s trees went, or where the money is. In the decade ending in 2021, nearly 1.9 million cubic metres of trees were wiped out. Chingee claimed a pine beetle investation was to blame. There is no sign of pine beetles in the surrounding area.

There are around 618 members in the McLeod Lake Indian Band, most of which don’t live in McLeod Lake.

Chief today of the McLeod Lake Indian Band is Harley Chingee (hchingee@yahoo.ca). In 2024 Chingee was paid $179,563 plus $132,092 in expenses.
