Alberta Justice Minister ‘Mickey’ Amery (Qassim Mohammed Makki Amery), who is also the attorney general, says new rules that would grant him immunity from law society sanctions is necessary to ward off “political activism, or complaints, or other interference.” Amery, who is married to Sam Mraiche’s cousin Fariha Amery, introduced Bill 14 in December, legislation that includes multiple significant changes in Alberta.
Bill 14 would make Alberta’s attorney general immune from sanctions while carrying out the “duties and functions” of the position. The attorney general serves as the chief legal adviser to the government and is responsible for overseeing the province’s prosecution services.

Former provincial justice minister Kaycee Madu was reprimanded by the law society in February 2025. As justice minister in 2021, he phoned Edmonton’s police chief after receiving a traffic ticket. Its reported he wanted it ‘fixed’. Madu is appealing the law society decision and fine. It’s set to be heard in February.

Madu’s successor as minister of justice, Tyler Shandro, also faced a law society proceeding, though that came from incidents during his time as health minister. He was found not guilty of unprofessional conduct, in large part because it was concluded he wasn’t acting as a lawyer during the infractions. Shandro served as the Minister of Justice and Attorney General for Alberta from 2022 until 2023. Tyler Shandro (then Minister of Health) gifted Mraiche his first sweetheart procurement deal in 2020 for substandard Chinese PPE.

A third Alberta justice minister, Jonathan Denis, was also sanctioned for professional misconduct citations after he left government. Jonathan Denis who was Alberta’s justice minister in 2014, is accused of multiple infractions, including ‘threatening’ a witness who was mid-testimony in a lawsuit in 2022. Two new allegations of professional misconduct came just one day after CBC News reported that Denis is appealing his two previous citations and fines.

The intent of Qassim Mohammed Makki Amery is suspect. The rule of law applies to everyone, including attorneys general who are licensed lawyers. Granting them immunity without explaining why invites speculation as to motivation. What are they responding to? What are they concerned about? It absolutely appears Alberta Justice Minister ‘Mickey’ Amery is trying to shield myself for his own improper conduct vis-a-vis ‘Corrupt Care’ and his relative Hassan Khalil Sam Mraiche.

All 14 employees of the foundation that manages millions of dollars in grants to non-profit legal organizations have resigned in the wake of Bill 14. Edmonton lawyer Moira Rose Vane says she and another lawyer were informed Tuesday that the Law Society of Alberta had removed them from the board of the Alberta Law Foundation. The entire law foundation staff gave two weeks’ notice Jan. 5 in response to Bill 14, which gives the minister more power over how the law foundation is governed. Spokesperson for Justice Minister Mickey Amery, Heather Jenkins declined to comment, but linked them to the minister’s intervention.
