Angelo Ruggiero Jr. denied bail

A mobster linked to a case involving rigged card games tied to NBA members was denied bail amid fears he could tamper with a witness. A judge denied bail for Anthony Ruggiero Jr. despite his request for a $5m bond backed by family and friends. Judge Joseph Marutollo agreed with federal prosecutors, who raised concerns about Ruggiero’s potential to interfere with witnesses.

Gambino soldier Angelo Ruggiero Jr. is the son of Angelo Ruggiero, who was a capo under John Gotti. Ruggiero participated in the 1985 slaying of boss Paul Castellano.

In 1998, Angelo Ruggiero Jr. was sentenced to 3 years on grand larceny charges. In 2012, he was charged with threatening a cooperating witness. The victim, Timothy Angelini was supposed to testify in the trial of another Gambino associate. “He made his hand in the shape of a gun and said, ‘You know how we take care of rats — up close and personal.’”

“I believed he was a cooperating witness … and when I confronted him through my tone of voice and physical demeanor I attempted to dissuade Angelini by letting him know I would be unhappy if he testified,” Ruggiero Jr., 40, said. The judge demanded more specifics about the words used and how he would be “unhappy.” “I said, ‘If this is true, you’re gonna have a problem with me,’ Ruggiero admitted.
