Prosecutors argued today that Toronto-area lawyer Deepak Balwant Paradkar, 62, accused of advising the murder of a federal witness in an drug smuggling ring, should not have been bailed. Lawyers for the Attorney General of Canada say Paradkar should be detained until his extradition hearing.<\/p>\n

The Crown says the Appeal Court\u2019s intervention is necessary to \u201csalvage the public\u2019s confidence in the administration of justice, to protect the public, and to ensure that Canada\u2019s ability to comply with treaty obligations in this important case is not frustrated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deepak Balwant Paradkar, the ‘cocaine lawyer’, was a top level operative of Ryan Wedding’s organization and sat at the executive table. His involvement was very large and extremely serious. Less important players were denied bail.<\/p>\n

The filing argues that Paradkar must return to jail because his bail has jeopardized public confidence in the administration of justice, threatens public safety and hurts Canada\u2019s ability to meet its international extradition obligations.<\/p>\n

The judge ruled that Mr. Paradkar\u2019s life could be in jeopardy if he continued to be held in jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
